A bittersweet day comes to an end with the meeting of the last drama club. I have had such a fun time and learned a lot from the students in my club.
Today I brought my puppet trunk and we played a bit and put on puppet shows for one another. Below are some pictures of our fun.

Numbers for our club are hanging at around 6 due to the awesome outside weather and the new obsession with the swing set. Today we kind of just did a "games day", where the students picked a few games to play and I taught them a few new ones. All of these games were so much fun for the students, especially when I over-dramatized my defeat. I have put links to all of the games we played below: ** Note on Look Up - instead of just sitting down when they are out, I have students die a dramatic death, which they love! **
We have been working on some awesome reader's theatre, though the spring weather has started to dwindle our numbers. The students who stay make up for their small number with big enthusiasm. I started off our session with the tale of "Rindercella", a tongue twister fairy tale about a geutiful birl who loses her sass glipper. The students were roaring with amusement at the changes they heard in this beloved tale. I have attached a PDF copy to this blog post.
We finished drama club today with a game of ninja, which ended in a foot to the face. The student took her battle wound in stride though, finishing the game, and then proceeding to get an ice pack. She has worn her shiner with pride for the rest of the week. I am sad that my time with these students is coming to an end. Today we continued with our improvisation mini unit. We started with "Prui", back by popular demand!
We continued with a game called "Space Jump", which can be described in the link below it is game xiii. in the appendix. This game went really well. Improv works well with young students because they are not afraid to put their inhibitions aside to try their hardest to do well. I told the grade 4/5 teacher today that drama club was happening and then came the hoards. We went from 12 last week to 30! It was a little insane!! I played a game I like to call the colander game. Every student takes 2 slips of paper and writes the name of a well know character or famous person on each. We split into two groups and place our slips of paper in two different bins. In a circle, we go around and pull a slip of paper one at a time and try to make the group guess what is on the slip of paper. Once they guess, pass the bin to the right and the next person does the same. Get the students to do this like a race in their groups, seeing who can finish their bin of names first.
I don't know if I would do this game again with so many students. It would work better with smaller numbers. Today we had about 20 students and everything went very smoothly. I told them that we were going to work on some mini units, the first being Improvisation. We started with a game called "Prui". Every student closes their eyes and I tap one "it" person on the head. Get the students to spread around the room and then feel around with their eyes closed. If they come in contact with someone, they ask, "Prui?". If it is the "it" person, they stay silent and the person open's their eyes and joins them. If the person isn't it, they answer back, "Prui", and the person keeps looking.
They absolutely love this game and we played it for the entirety of drama club. I will definitely use it again. Today marks the first day of our Gr. 4-6 drama club! I made an announcement in the morning, but it seemed to get very little response. Out of the 12 people that came, 10 were my own students. We played a game called "frozen picture", where three students leave the room and the rest of us make a frozen vignette. The three students come into the class and study our positions for one minute, they then leave ad we change three things in the picture. The "it" students return and try to guess the things we changed.
This game went very well with the students. They caught onto the concept really quickly and enjoyed the game. I would use it again and highly recommend it for this age group. |
